Senior High Notes 22nd September 2023

At Derby High, we believe in nurturing not only the minds but also the hearts of our students. We understand that education is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about shaping future leaders who are not only academically adept but also compassionate and committed to making the world a better place.
“Peace One Day” is a global movement that resonates deeply with our school’s ethos. Established with the noble goal of promoting peace and non-violence, this initiative invites individuals and organisations from all walks of life to come together on a single day to inspire and celebrate peace. It is a day dedicated to reflecting on the power of unity and the potential for positive change. The UN International Day of Peace began on the 21st September 1981 and was organised by the United Nations General Assembly. Each year, there is a different International Day of Peace theme. For example, in 2020, the theme was ‘Shaping Peace Together’, whilst in 2021 the theme was ‘Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World’.

For Peace One Day 2023, the theme is ‘Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #Global Goals’. It is a push for us to recognise how our individual and collective actions can affect and foster global peace. After a thought provoking assembly on Peace One Day, each class or form through the whole school have been thinking about what action they could take, whether it be creating less food waste or turning their bedroom light off. Each class has then been deciding upon their pledge for action.
It’s heartening to see how each class has taken the initiative to think about the actions they can take to contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful world. This exercise not only instils a sense of responsibility but also empowers students to make a positive impact, no matter how small their actions may seem.
