In my Primary assembly yesterday, I shared two quotations with the children.
The first was from Sir Francis Bacon:
“Knowledge itself is power.”
The second was a rather more light-hearted observation:
“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.”
We spent some time exploring the difference between knowledge and wisdom. School is, of course,
a place where children gain knowledge every day. Whether they are learning to read, mastering
times tables, discovering the wonders of science or exploring the past through history, our children
are constantly building their understanding of the world around them.
However, education is about much more than simply acquiring knowledge. It is also about learning
how to use that knowledge wisely. Wisdom is about judgement. It is about making good choices. It is about understanding when and how to apply what we know.
As I reflected on Sports Day today, I was struck by how many examples of wisdom were on display.
Children knew how to compete, but they also knew how to encourage others. They knew how to try
their very best, but they also knew how to show resilience when things did not go according to plan.
They knew how to celebrate success, whilst also recognising the achievements of their friends and
teammates.
