This week’s House Music was, quite simply, a joy. The breadth of talent on display across the school was remarkable. From confident soloists to thoughtful duets, vibrant ensembles to powerful vocal performances, the standard was incredibly high. It was particularly wonderful to see such a wide range of instruments represented and so many pupils willing to step forward and perform.
Events like House Music remind us how important the creative arts are within school life. Music brings people together, requires courage, collaboration and discipline, and allows pupils to express themselves in ways that are both personal and communal. A huge thank you must go to the music department for the hours of preparation behind the scenes, and to all the pupils who practised, rehearsed and ultimately shared their talents with such confidence. It was a celebration not only of musical ability, but of the spirit of participation that makes our community so special.
I also want to briefly return to the inspection report I shared earlier in the week. I do hope that many of you have had the opportunity to read it in full. It is a report that we are incredibly proud of, not just because of the judgements within it, but because of the language used to describe the school and its community.
Inspection reports are written very carefully and within a tightly controlled framework. Words such as excellent, outstanding or exceptional are simply not used within the reporting system. Instead, inspectors must choose language that is precise and measured. Within that context, phrases such as pupils making good progress, or aspects of the school being identified as a significant strength, represent very high praise indeed.
As a Reporting Inspector for ISI myself, I have the privilege of leading inspection teams in other schools and writing the final reports following an inspection. Through that work I know just how carefully each sentence is considered and how deliberately that language is chosen. For that reason, I hope you will read the report with confidence and pride in what it reflects about Derby High: a school where pupils flourish academically, personally and within a genuinely supportive community.
