Yesterday the school was filled with a wonderful array of odd socks as we marked both World Kindness Day and Anti-Bullying Week. It was a joyful sea of colour and a simple reminder that being different is something to celebrate, not to hide.
In my assembly yesterday, we explored what it really means to be kind. Using the lyrics of Bruno Mars’ “Count on Me”, we thought about kindness as something steady and dependable, not just the one-off moments, but the small, consistent acts that build trust and friendship. We talked about what it means to be someone others can count on, someone who notices, includes, listens, and stands up for what’s right.
I shared with the children an important quote:
“Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees the others.”
Aristotle, Greek Philosopher
We reflected together on how true kindness often takes courage, the courage to speak up, to stand beside someone who needs support, or simply to be ourselves when it feels easier to blend in.
Odd socks may only last for a day, but the reminder they carry, to celebrate difference and choose kindness, is one we will keep with us all year.
