Our School

Vision & Values

Derby High is a coeducational independent day school with over 660 boys and girls aged 3-18, conveniently situated on the outskirts of Derby.

Derby High School prides itself on its friendliness, and visitors to the school invariably comment on the calm and happy atmosphere in the school and the excellent relationships between the children and the staff.

One of the great strengths of the school is its broad social and cultural intake.

The school has a Christian foundation in the Anglican tradition, but our school community includes those of all faiths and none and while our values maintain our Christian tradition, we seek to learn from and celebrate the diversity of cultures and beliefs within the school.

Derby High was awarded the highest possible ‘Excellent’ rating following a full inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate in January 2023. Being a member of The Heads’ Conference (HMC), a prestigious association of leading independent schools in the UK and around the world, recognises our commitment to academic excellence, innovation in education, and a dedication to providing our students with the best possible educational experience.

Derby High is a vibrant and successful school.

Last night the Senior Hall was full with parents, grandparents and siblings for our Years 3 and 4 production of Wiz Wham Alakazam by Niki Davies. The confidence displayed by our pupils was truly remarkable, and their performances were nothing short of extraordinary. From beautiful singing, to the excellence in acting, the level of talent on display was awe-inspiring.

This year’s House Drama competition took place this week, with the whole senior school watching excitedly. St Andrew and St George performed comedies. St Andrew’s play ‘Nickers’ had the audience laughing at an argument between burglars, while another pair of thieves searched for a pot of gold in St George’s ‘The End of the Rainbow’. St David and St Patrick’s plays raised the tension, St David with a tense story about ‘Murder in the Green Room’ and Patrick with their chilling version of ‘The Monkey’s Paw’.
There were fantastic performances by each cast, leaving the judges with a difficult decision about which play and performer should win. In the end, St George were victorious, and our Drama Prefect won best performance.
Well done to all the cast and crew!

Yesterday’s Senior assembly was led by Dr Mathews and marked the beginning of Black History Month. This year`s Black History Month went with the theme of `Saluting Our Sisters` and considered the contribution that black women make every day. The focus was on black women now, that are making history, by making a difference. The message of the assembly is that black women have always made history, even if they haven`t always made the history books.
With thanks to Hannah, Year 10, for sharing her beautiful artwork.
